Aftertime by Sophie Littlefield

Paperback, 384 pages

The world’s gone.
Worse, so is her daughter.  Awakening in a bleak landscape as scarred as her body, Cass Dollar vaguely recalls surviving something terrible. Having no idea how many days—or weeks—have passed, she slowly realizes the horrifying truth: Ruthie has vanished.
And with her, nearly all of civilization. Where once-lush hills carried cars and commerce, the roads today see only cannibalistic Beaters—people turned hungry for human flesh by a government experiment gone wrong.
In a broken, barren California, Cass will undergo a harrowing quest to get her Ruthie back. Few people trust an outsider, let alone a woman who became a zombie and somehow turned back, but she finds help from an enigmatic outlaw, Smoke. Smoke is her savior, and her safety. For the Beaters are out there. And the humans grip at survival with their trigger fingers. Especially when they learn that she and Ruthie have become the most feared, and desired, of weapons in a brave new world….- Goodreads
My Opinion: This was interesting. It has a little bit of The Book of Eli (the movie) and a little bit of Resident Evil and it all mixed so well together. Cass was interesting. I love that as we learn more about her we see her flaws and that she is like a normal person. I love that she is also a great mother. Something that was really interesting to see was the progression in her relationship between herself and Smoke.

Something I also really liked about the story was that, if an apocalypse did happen, it would probably happen like in the book and that eventually people will see it as an opportunity to start controlling others. And that religious zealotry will try to take over. The Order was really extreme and it wasn’t even that people wanted to follow it, it just kept them safe. I think that that is one of the reasons people become manipulated so easily.

The plot was ingenious. There were so many things that were just different from other Zombie books that I have read that it was awesome. (Not that I have read many zombie books). The zombies were a lot like those of Resident Evil, changed due to something released (a terrorist attack of some sort) and they feed on people, but only their skin and they want the people to be alive as they’re feeding on them.

This was definitely an enjoyable read, read in about a day, and I couldn’t stop reading it.

Overall: 4 out of 5
